I think most of us started with metalcore when we first became interested in metal. So I'm sure we all have embarrassing stories about what we used to like and later grew out of... tongue

For me, I used to be majorly into tough guy hardcore. The more meatheaded, the better, for some unknown reason. I guess in my mind, it equated to heaviness. I'm not sure why I even liked a genre that I now think is almost entirely garbage; I never could really relate to what these guys were talking about, so who knows why it ever once resonated with me. I still enjoy some old Throwdown or something every now and then, but that's about it.

Also, pretty much all metalcore I loved. Especially the really polished, mainstream stuff like All That Remains and Shadows Fall. I guess when you're like 13 and just dipping your toes into a huge genre, those kinds of things stick with you.

Even before all that, I liked pop-punk...a lot. And didn't like "real" punk. I recall hearing Minor Threat one day and thinking "Why are they so popular, this sucks" (yeah...I know). AFI is about the only band from those dark days that's stayed with me. Even after all the simplified, saccharine garbage they've put out over the last few years, I'm sort of bonded with them to some extent and I just can't bring myself to admit they're terrible now...or stop buying every new album they release. I think I'm going to be the odd-duck out here in that I predate bad metalcore, so it wasn't my gateway to metal.

My gateway bands to metal in general were Deicide and Cannibal Corpse. To me, they are still great bands and I listen to them fairly often. My gateway to black metal is a little lamer, like most kids in 1996, I got into bands like Burzum, Emperor, Mayhem, Cradle of Filth, Old Man's Child, etc. Of those bands, I only enjoy two at this point: Mayhem and Cradle of Filth (anything pre-Dusk and Her Embrace is fantastic), but I'd hardly call any of those bands embarrassing, especially in 1996. It didn't take very long before I discovered bands like Impaled Nazarene, Havohej, Beherit, Blasphemy, etc. and from there, I never really looked back.

I started with Iron Maiden, Dio, Black Sabbath, Motorhead, Venom, and the like. However I had some bad sources for Metal so I ended up getting into bands like: Black Deahla Murder (or however its spelled), red chord, and shadows fall. Then when I was getting into Grindcore I tended to like really shitty Grind more for sheer amusement than an actual enjoyment of the music. Porno "Grind" bands like Cemetery Rapist, Anal Asthma, and a few others were entertaining but eventually their novelty wore off. Also Cattle Decapitation cause they were the only local band I knew of at the time. And throw in the Norway BM scene and probably a few other bands that I'm not thinking of right now. Not really embarrassed about any of them but certainly can't hear whatever caught my attention the first time with any of them now.

I looked through the smilies to see if there was one to portray hanging my head in shame, but I didn't see anything that fit that Laughing

I moved through that phase pretty quickly. At that time I had just started going to concerts and I was discovering new bands on almost a daily basis. So while I got into Trivium, it was during that same time I also got into bands like Anaal Nathrakh, Pig Destroyer, Lair of the Minotaur, and Emperor. So there was some good mixed with the bad.

Being a big wrestling fan when I was younger I was exposed to a couple of nu metal songs that I liked and was a big Linkin Park and Nickleback fan when I was younger. When I turned 13 and discovered Black Sabbath, that all ended pretty damn quckly

I liked a lot of that nu-metal shit when it first came out. Mainly for the inevitable part towards the end when the music builds up to the part where everyone is supposed to mosh. I imagine that people who listen to deathcore get the same enjoyment out of the breakdowns. I've listened to a clusterfuck of different stuff since I was about 9 so I was always taking in the good and bad no matter the genre. Now I'm pretty set in my listening tastes thankfully.

I listened to a lot of metalcore when I was younger and I still do, i'm not ashamed of it just because it's the cool thing to do nowdays.

I like Lamb Of God just as much now as I did in 2000, plus there's a lot of Every Time I Die and The Chariot in the mix now. I also love Hatred Surge and Spazz so I think I'm definitely beyond the "poser fag" label. lol

I haven't listened to Lamb of God in ages. Just haven't had the need. And I don't even know where my cds of theirs are, and while looking for them I'll probably just get side tracked anyway.

I remember at one point I thought Spineshank was good. It's kind of embarrassing.

^ Ha, I still have "Smothered" on my iPod. It's labeled under the genre "Guilty Pleasures."
