I just ordered "High Tension" last night, should be here in a couple days. I've always been curious to see it, I'm pretty excited for it to get here.

REALLY REALLY GOOD psychological horror thriller, if you wanna call it that. Embarassed I'm not a big horror junkie, but I liked High Tension alot. Smile

Watched Nobel Son a couple days ago, thought it was very good. Great plot twisted, crazy twisted characters and Alan Rickman was great in it.

Watched Red tonight and it was about what i expected silly and over the top but entertaining still. John Malkovich is always one of my favorites.

He's a nerd so I guess this resonated with him somehow. I couldn't see past my blinding rage at all of the hipsters in this movie to enjoy it. Something about it just aggravated me so damn much, it was like it was trying way too hard to be cool. And the super-ADD editing and obnoxious special effects didn't help. Apparently, it's very faithful to the original manga, though, so I guess if you liked that, you'd automatically like the movie (not that I expect anyone here to read manga...). It had kind of a neat metaphor about overcoming the past, but GODDAMN, THE HIPSTERS.

Fantastic film. One of the best i've seen in recent years. Then again i don't believe in "Hipsters" so that's probably why i dug it more.

I really don't get the hype. It was trying so hard to be hip that it was just annoying...people do seem to be really divided on this movie, though.

I got High Tension in the mail a few days back (still haven't watched it yet), and I also got The Descent yesterday. I saw it on TV a while ago and really liked it more than I thought I would, so I went ahead and bought it. I thought it would have been better if they didn't show the monsters in so much detail, but whatever, it was still really enjoyable. And I also just won Audition on eBay (seen it, loved it). I am a happy soul. Very Happy

It's based on a manga comic. So what did you expect? Not even Cera's type cast acting ruined that film for me. Found the fight scenes better than most action films too.

High Tension is great by the way. As are the other Aja films.

Good film displaying the many hypocrisies of the Islamic religion and the courage of one person to reveal the truth to the world.

I still haven't gotten around to "High Tension" yet. Although my normally squeamish horror-hating boyfriend, has agreed to watch it with me, if I haven't seen it by the weekend (that should be fun Rolling Eyes). One way or another, I'll see it this week, hopefully...

Last week, I watched the unrated cut of "The Descent." I liked it the first time I saw it, but I liked it a lot more the second time. I'm really interested in how horror movies use women to get their point across more effectively, so a group of female protagonists (and maybe an antagonist, depending on how you see it) and mainly male monsters is interesting. I was kind of disappointed that the only real difference on the unrated version is the alternate ending, though. The American ending is really fucking dumb, but you really aren't missing out on much if you see the rated version.

I also watched "The Final Destination" a couple days ago. I know they've made a bunch of these and they're all pretty retarded, but this was my first exposure to the series. I knew it would be bad, but DAMN. I already lost all hope when they used a dolphin noise as a skidding sound effect in the beginning. This was one of those things where it was so bad, it wasn't even an enjoyable, b-movie kind of bad. It was pretty much softcore torture porn, so even in the realm of torture porn, it fails. I'm kind of amazed at just how awful this movie was...

Finally watched "High Tension." Geez, high tension indeed...I probably spent about half the movie unintentionally holding my breath. I was expecting just a bunch of grisly violence, but they did a good job creating suspense too. Also loved how the "hero" and "villain" (if you can really call them that) were clever and meticulous with the attempts at one-upping each other. It's always nice to see characters who are smart, but not without enough flaws to make them human, and who aren't just unstoppable killing machines. Makes me want to look up more French horror. Smile

"Audition" got here today. That'll probably be what I watch tomorrow. Love that movie.

Watched "Audition" a while back, as promised. Boyfriend was curious about it and I was thinking it was mostly just suspense with little gore, so the poor squeamish thing was subjected to all kinds of gruesome violence at the end that I forgot was in it. Whoops. That's always a fun movie to show people. Razz

Also saw "Jennifer's Body" this morning, which was kind of neat. Not the greatest movie ever or anything (totally mediocre plot), but a fun movie and the dialogue was pretty great sometimes. I'm sure most of you would like it just because the plot pretty much revolves around a hot girl getting hotter through killing. I just wish it had pushed the boundaries a little more. With a few minutes of editing, it could have easily been PG-13, and been your standard PG-13 horror movie; it needed some more violence, methinks.

In a few hours, I might be the proud winner of "Equilibrium." Fingers crossed. Stay away from my auction, fuckers. Shoot

I thought High Tension was pretty stupid. Lots of parts didn't make sense once the "twist" was unveiled. Great gore scenes, but dumb story.

^ I thought you were pretty stupid. Mad

No, just kidding...SPOILERS, highlight to read more clearly. I think that movie's fatal mistake was implying it was told from the point of view of the protagonist/antagonist. That set them up for a lot of "Wait, how did that happen" kind of moments. But I think most of it worked. Some aspects of it made sense if you realized she was probably delusional. Like the whole trying to save her friend from the crazy, over-sexed guy was like her pure, friends-only side of herself wrestling with knowing she'd never have a relationship with this girl. So with that in mind, a lot of the fight scenes between the two of them could have just been all in her head. I know a lot of people complained about the inconsistencies about her telling the detectives about them seeing her on the security camera (since she never realized she was the crazy guy too, she wouldn't have known they only saw her) but I think things like that are due to how they presented the movie and could have been fixed with some simple editing changes. I personally thought they should have continued with the alter ego idea until the end, and then showed her again in custody, and from there sort of gone backwards and given all the pieces of info the detectives learned so it was really a shock until the end. It would have made more sense and just been more dramatic. But whatever, the gore's still great. That throat slicing part was br00tal. I think I cringed the whole time.

Speaking of gore, watched "The Evil Dead" last night. I love that movie. Very Happy And I did win "Equilibrium," so that's coming my way shortly.

For gore, nothing tops the Guinea Pig movies. That director is fucked up.

I've got the boxed set that they released after they removed the ban on them. The first movie in the series is just a recreation of a snuff film, which is beyond fucked up really, since it's pretty much 20 min. of 2 dudes torturing and raping a woman with no plot, even knowing it's fake it's still pretty fucking ridiculous.

Finally put myself through Avatar yesterday. What a load of bollocks. I got bored. Could have been really special if it wasn't so family friendly maybe. All that money on visual effects and there is only three colours used in the whole film! What a waste! Might as well have been in black and white. The references to certain politics were annoying. Why couldn't the aliens be fucking aliens?! Seemed quite African to me. The story was taken from several other films. Miss Weaver was a stupid character. Worst film i've seen since Transformers 2. Gets a few points because the final battle was ok and James made the military tanks and gunships looks cool. 1.5 out of 5.

Really wasn't a fan of Avatar. Total shit. If it wasn't for the battle scene at the end it would have been a complete bust. but even that couldn't make up for the rest of the film.

My biggest problem with Avatar was the predictable and cliche storyline. Other then that I thought it was ok, but far from anything special.

Watched The Prestige last night. I saw it some years ago when it was in theaters and liked it, but I enjoyed way more this time. I also had no idea Christopher Nolan directed it until the credits came up at the end.

I love that movie. And not just because of Christian Bale, you jerks, don't you dare suggest that. Snooty

I attempted to watch "The Crazies" this morning, but alas, I fell asleep after half an hour. Not because of boredom, just because it was too damn early and I'm sick. I'll try again tomorrow and let you guys know how it goes this time. Laughing

I like it the least so far... but that's probably 'cause I liked the original bad guys best, Avon, Stringer, Webay, etc.... Razz

I LOVE this white mayor though... his character is totally unique to TV.

Finished "The Crazies." Nothing special, but I was glad to see it at least wasn't the "28 Days Later" rip-off it looked like from the commercials. The virus was pretty lame and was just an excuse to have a whole bunch of slasher-type killers, and a lot of it was just too polished. It'd be a fun drinking game to take a shot every time someone was either shot from behind at a crucial moment by someone off camera, or for every time the lights "unexpectedly" went off. When it wasn't being completely cliche, it's attempts at originality were often so ridiculous and implausible, it was laughable (I did like the car wash part though). Again, nothing special.

By contrast, I also (finally) saw "The Thing," which was a much better execution of basically the same idea. Of course, you all know how great that movie is. Despite looking a little dated, it was still really awesome and engaging. But ah, the good ol' days of special effects, when things were done by hand using ingenuity, and not just programming a computer to do it all for you...

Ah yes, Carcetti. I started off thinking "am I really going to have to watch this dick all season?" but then he turns out to be one of the most interesting and engaging characters. I enjoy season 4 because of the focus on the young kids, the education system and how the kids are transformed by the streets.
